Rustic Pumpkins

Turn your front porch into the envy of the neighborhood with this trio of quick-and-simple rustic pumpkins.

Materials

  • Dow STYROFOAM Brand Foam Sheets: 1″x12″x18″, 1⁄2″x12″x12″
  • Modern Options Paints: Metallic Surfacer, Iron; Antiquing Solution, Rust
  • Brown acrylic paint (optional)

Tools

  • Paintbrush, 1″
  • Utility knife or serrated kitchen knife
  • Teaspoon

Basic Supplies

scissors, pencil, soap, newspaper (to cover work surface)

Directions

Sizes

9-1⁄2″, 14-1⁄4″, 17-1⁄2″ tall

Pumpkins

1. Print and cut out pattern. Transfer design. Use knife to cut materials from plastic-foam as indicated. (Note: Rub blade with bar soap to help blade glide through foam easily.) Make 1⁄4″-deep, “V”-shaped cuts along section lines. Use edge of spoon to smooth cut edges and tip of spoon to press central vein line on each leaf.

2. Adhere leaves to pumpkins.

3. Follow manufacturer’s instructions to paint pumpkins and leaves two coats Iron. Paint backs Iron or Brown. Follow manufacturer’s instructions and use disposable brush to paint pumpkins and leaves Rust.

Fall Fleece Pumpkin

Decorate your home with this quick-and-easy pumpkin – make in various sizes and shades to create your own unique pumpkin patch!

Materials

  • Orange fleece, 12” x 24”
  • Polyester fiberfill
  • Jute twine, 2-ply
  • Natural raffia
  • Brown paper lunch bag

Tools

  • Sewing needle with orange thread
  • Glue gun and sticks

Basic Supplies

scissors, ruler

Directions

Note

Adult supervision for kids is needed when using a glue gun.

Pumpkin

1. With right sides together, use a running stitch to sew short ends of fleece together in a 1/2” seam. Use long running stitches to sew along one long edge, pull up threads to gather, knot and clip threads. Turn fleece right side out. Stuff with fiberfill. Gather stitch at top of pumpkin; knot and clip threads.

2. To make the grooved sections, cut a 22” length from twine. Center twine at bottom of pumpkin, and pull up ends to make slight indent; tie ends together in a knot at top. Repeat two more times so grooved sections are approximately 4” apart. Trim twine ends.

3. For stem, measure 5” from top of bag and cut; discard bottom. Leaving bottom of stem flared out, twist remaining portion of bag forming a stem. Adhere stem to top of pumpkin. Tie several strands of raffia in a bow around stem.

Tip

For larger or smaller pumpkins, follow above instructions, cutting different size pieces of fleece. Use various shades of orange if desired.

Yarn-Wrapped Pins

Crafts ’n things Craft of the Day

 

This quick yarn-wrapping project will be a hit at the senior day care, scout meeting, or preschool! Or make these adorable pins for a parent or relative to wear on Halloween day.

Materials

  • Forster Woodsies: XL Circle; Large Squares, two
  • White cotton fabric scrap (Mummy)
  • Caron Simply Soft Yarn: Limelight (Frankenstein)
  • Lion Brand Fun Fur: Black (Cat)
  • Felt scraps: black, lavender, white
  • Ribbon: orange/black polka dot, black
  • Pin back, 2” (for each)
  • Wiggle eyes, two (for each), various sizes

Tools

  • White opaque marker
  • Beacon Adhesives Kids Choice Glue!

Basic Supplies

scissors, ruler

Directions

STEP 1

Wrap the following: XL circle with white cotton fabric strip (Mummy); large square with Limelight yarn (Frankenstein); large square with Black fun fur (Cat). Adhere ends.

STEP 2

Adhere eyes onto each face. Measure and cut three 5”-long orange/black polka dot ribbon lengths. Tie ribbons into bows. Adhere bows onto bottom of each face.

STEP 3

For Mummy and Frankenstein, cut two 1” black ribbon pieces (mouths); draw zigzag “stitches” on ribbon with white marker. Adhere mouths above bows. For Cat, cut tiny black and white felt triangles (ears). Layer and adhere ears onto face. Cut tiny white felt rectangle (nose). Adhere nose onto face.

STEP 4

For Frankenstein, cut tiny black felt triangles (hair) and oval (nose). Adhere hair and nose onto face. Cut small purple felt rectangles (neck bolts). Adhere neck bolts onto sides of face.

STEP 5

Adhere pin backs onto backs.

Tips

  •  Use your ribbon and felt scraps to embellish your characters as you wish!
  • If wooden shapes aren’t available, cut large circles and squares from cardboard. Then just wrap with yarn and fabric!

Candy Coffin Favor

Basic Supplies

Coffin

1. Print and cut out pattern. Trace hinged coffin pattern onto black cardstock; cut out on solid lines. Fold piece along dashed lines indicated on pattern and assemble; adhere tabs to secure.

2. Cut coffin top from orange cardstock. Insert mini brad near center top. Cut short thread length and fold over brad; tape or adhere ends to secure. Adhere piece to top of coffin. Outline edges with Orange Peel glitter glue.

3. Stamp black sentiment onto white cardstock; emboss with clear powder. Trim sentiment and line edges with black marker. Use cotton ball to pounce yellow chalk over sentiment; repeat with Perfect Gold pigment. Adhere to coffin top over thread ends.

4. Stamp black mummy onto white cardstock; emboss with clear powder. Cut out image and color with marker. Blend color with water brush; let dry. Apply thin wash of Pewter watercolor over image; let dry. Adhere to coffin with foam dots. Fill as desired.

Tip

A handful of candy corn is just the right size for this mini coffin favor.

Halloween Spider Card

Spread the magic of Halloween to family and friends with this spooky cute spider card.

Materials

  • Black cardstock
  • Patterned paper: orange check; white/orange polka dot
  • Purple mulberry paper
  • Black wire, 28-gauge

Tools

  • Heat tool
  • Wire cutter
  • Uchida White Liquid Appliqué Pen
  • Markers: white opaque fine-tip, black
  • Black chalk
  • Adhesives: craft glue, dimensional adhesive dots

Basic Supplies

scissors, ruler, straight pins, computer and printer

Directions

STEP 1

Cut 5-1/2”x8-1/2” piece from orange check paper; score and fold in half.

STEP 2

Tear 2-1/4”x3-3/4” piece from mulberry paper; adhere near top of card front.

STEP 3

Use size 39 font of choice (designer used Space Toaster font) and computer to print “Happy Halloween” on orange polka dot; trim to 1-1/2”x3”. Chalk edges. Use straight pin to poke hole in bottom center and thread 2” wire length through hole; curl end to secure. Use dimensional dots to adhere to card front over mulberry paper.

STEP 4

Print and cut out pattern. Cut spider body from black cardstock; poke holes in each side. Cut four 4-1/4” lengths from black wire. Carefully thread wires through left hole, front to back, then through right hole, back to front. Bend and arrange legs, trimming wires as needed.

STEP 5

Use white opaque pen to draw nose and mouth. Follow manufacturer’s instructions on Liquid Appliqué Pen to draw eyes; let dry. Heat with heat tool. Use black marker to dot eyes.

STEP 6

Use dimensional dots to adhere spider to card front, catching wire end behind spider.

A Haunting We Will Go Candy Pockets

There is no “trick” here when it comes to making these cute candy pockets! They are definitely a “treat” for the witches, vampires, and goblins that come ringing your doorbell!

Materials

  • Wool felt: 1⁄8 yard each: black, tan, beige, rust
  • Homespun fabric scraps
  • DMC 6-Strand Embroidery Floss: Black (310), Tan (738)
  • White buttons, two each: 1⁄4”, 1⁄2”
  • Black wire, 20-gauge

Tools

  • Freezer paper
  • Embroidery needle
  • Wire cutter
  • Craft glue

Basic Supplies

scissors, ruler, pencil, iron and pressing surface

Directions

STEP 1

Follow manufacturer’s instructions to prepare felt. (Note: Washing and drying will soften and give felt “aged” texture.) Cut out pattern. Transfer to freezer paper; cut out, allowing 1⁄4” borders. Iron freezer paper to felt; cut pockets and face patterns from felt as indicated. Remove freezer paper. Arrange faces on pockets; spot glue.

STEP 2

Blanket stitch pockets together using Black for ghost and pumpkin, and Tan for cat. Stitch ghost’s eyes and mouth, and pumpkin’s eyes, nose, and mouth Tan. Stitch cat’s nose Black and backstitch whiskers and mouth Tan.

STEP 3

Fold top edge of pockets down 1” to form cuff. Blanket stitch cuff with contrasting floss color. For eyes, attach buttons to cat and pumpkin.

STEP 4

For hanger, cut three 10” wire lengths. Poke wire length through pocket; twist inside to secure. Curl length around pencil; poke through remaining side and twist inside to secure. Cut three 8” lengths from fabric scraps. Tie fabric into bow on hanger.

Candy Corn Garland

Paint this Candy Corn Garland to brighten a porch, decorate a classroom, or create a fun and festive atmosphere for your Halloween party. This quick-and-easy clay pot activity is a fun way for kids to help with the Halloween decorations!

 

Materials

  • Terra cotta pots, 2″, four
  • Plaid Enterprises Apple Barrel Acrylic Paints: Harvest Orange, Yellow, White, Black
  • Toner Plastics Marshmallow Fun Wire, 18-gauge, 40” length

Tools

  • Black permanent fine-line marker
  • Beacon Adhesives Quick Grip All Purpose Adhesive

Basic Supplies

ruler, paintbrush, stencil brush, paper towel, paper plate (for palette), newspaper (to cover work surface)

Directions

STEP 1

Using photo as guide, paint rim of pots Harvest Orange, paint a 7/8” section above rim Yellow, and remaining area White. Let dry. See Figures 1, 2, 3, and 4. Use marker to draw a face on one side of each yellow section; outline edges as shown. For nose, dip handle end of paintbrush into Harvest Orange and touch to face; drybrush cheeks. (Note: To drybrush, dip stencil brush into paint, stroke on paper towel until almost dry, and brush surface in a circular motion.)

STEP 2

To assemble the garland, bend and curl wire randomly. Position pots along wire, spacing each approximately 8” apart. Insert 1-1/2” length of wire into top of pots; curl up wire on inside and adhere in place. Form a 1” long loop at each end of wire and twist to secure.

A Fun Halloween Craft And Memories Too! What Could Be Better?

In between the costume preparation, visits to the pumpkin patch, enjoying fall celebrations and carving those pumpkins, I am always interested in making new memories together with my children while creating kids Halloween crafts.

Jill Cornell here today with a fun Halloween craft you can do with your kids and a “spooky” way to dress it up when you are finished. Creating animals and other creatures using footprints and handprints make for wonderful keepsakes capturing a moment in time when your children are little. This project was just published in the October 17th edition of Crafts ‘n things Weekly.

I had a great time creating these spooky ghosts with my daughters. Take a look….

I simply cut black cardstock to 8”x10” so it could fit in a wooden frame and then painted my girls’ feet with white acrylic paint. Then we stamped their feet and allowed the project to dry. (This is also a great project to duplicate for grandparents and other family members). Here we are working on the stamping.

When the ghosts were dry, we added googly eyes using glue dots and then I drew around the edge of the cardstock with a white gel pen and added the date. I also labeled each ghost with little alphabet stickers.

I then took a plain wooden frame and painted it black, then added crackle medium and went over it with white paint. I added “Boo” with a couple different sticker fonts and adhered a border sticker at the top of the frame.

Then I cut a couple pieces of cheesecloth and glued with a hot glue gun. One of the pieces I tied off with a piece of twine and then added a patterned paper “curtain” of sorts. To distress the cheesecloth, I cut it up a little bit and then rubbed black ink on it.

  

This was a super fun, quick, easy project to add a little personal touch in my Halloween decorating, and the girls love looking at their ghosts too! Try making a ghost family with your entire family!

Basic Supplies

paper trimmer, detail scissors, ruler, pencil

Directions

STEP 1

Make 5”x5” gold top-fold card.

STEP 2

Cut 5” black cardstock square. Cut and adhere 4-1/2” corrugated paper square to black panel.

STEP 3

Cut 4” orange paper square; trim top 1/2” from square with scalloped scissors. Stamp Sorbet sentiment across panel, 1/4” from top edge. Adhere to layered panel.

STEP 4

Cut 7” burlap ribbon length. Wrap ribbon around bottom of layered panel, leaving corrugated paper edge visible; adhere ends at back using double-sided tape. Adhere panel to card.

STEP 5

Stamp Buttercup pumpkin image onto watercolor paper; heat emboss with clear powder. Punch image into circle; ink edges Sweet Leaf.

STEP 6

Stamp Sorbet dot frame image onto orange paper and Sweet Leaf date image onto watercolor paper; detail cut images. Adhere pumpkin to frame center with foam tape.

STEP 7

Cut 1-3/16” square and 1”x3” strip from watercolor paper. Ink square Buttercup and strip Sweet Leaf. Trim one end of strip into a “V”; stamp Sorbet sentiment. Adhere date circle to yellow square with foam dots; adhere one end of strip to back of dot frame.

STEP 8

Using photo as guide, adhere elements to card; use double-sided tape for pumpkin element and foam dots for date element.

STEP 9

Adhere crocheted flower to card with clear dot; adhere button to center with clear dot.

Tip

Clear embossing the pumpkin image adds a subtle hint of shine to an otherwise matte-finish card.

Crocheted Pumpkin Bag

Using bright orange and green fabric, crochet this pumpkin as a treat bag for all the little ghosts and goblins in your life or as a fun tote to carry during the Halloween season.

Materials

  • Cotton fabric: orange, 4 yards; green, 1 yard
  • Felt scraps: yellow, black

Tools

  • Q crochet hook
  • Beacon Adhesives Fabri-Tac Glue

Basic Supplies

scissors, measuring tape or ruler

Directions

STEP 1

Tear orange and green fabric into 1”-wide strips.

STEP 2

Knot same-color fabric strips together on one end. Roll same-color strips into balls (like yarn).

STEP 3

Using crochet hook and orange fabric, chain 18. Row 1: Single crochet into second chain from hook, single crochet in each chain across, turn. Row 2: Continue single crochet across each row until it measures 18” in length. Fasten off. Fold in half lengthwise and use fabric strip to weave between stitches, closing each side of bag. Tie off ends.

STEP 4

Tie green fabric strip onto top edge at one side of bag; single crochet into top row of bag. Repeat for one additional row. Fasten off. Tie end of fabric strip through crochet stitches at one side of bag. Chain 38, securing final chain through crocheted stitches at opposite edge of bag. Single crochet into second chain from hook, crochet in each chain, turn and repeat for total of two rows. Fasten off.

STEP 5

Print and cut out pattern. Adhere felt pieces onto front of bag. Let dry.

STEP 6

To finish, weave knotted ends of fabric strips in between crocheted stitches, trimming ends.

STEP 7

Measure and cut 18”-long strip of green fabric. Tie strip into bow and glue onto top of bag.
