Hello crafty friends, Alice here today sharing a fun project created for Me & My BIG Ideas using some of their new Halloween products. This started out as an inexpensive, unfinished wooden birdhouse from the craft store. After sanding down the rough spots, the top edges were painted lime green and the base was painted black. Since the sides and roof are covered with paper, only the edges need to be painted.
This particular style of birdhouse came with lots of windows (or maybe they are doors?) and I thought it would be interesting to figure out a way to add a light inside to up the spooky factor. Turned out a strand of Christmas lights was just the thing.
I drilled holes in the bottom of each section and pushed part of the string of lights inside. Then I attached the house to a cardboard box lid from the recycle bin, which covers up the extra cord. The box lid was painted black and a small opening was cut in the back to accommodate the plug.
A piece of vellum was layered over each window, which keeps the strand of lights from showing and also allows the mini bat (sticker) to look like it is flying out of the window.
One of the best parts about designing for a company is that you get to see new products before they hit the stores. One of the downsides is that you are often working with prototypes where each piece needs to be cut out by hand. So please don’t pay attention to my messy cutting job… this cute banner sticker is cut much more precisely in the final product!
The final version of this chipboard bat sticker is covered with black glitter (which I didn’t realize when I attached the plain black prototype… so picture this guy all blinged out). A craft knife can be used to cut a small slit in the perch for the bat to rest on.
It looks so much better all lit up, don’t you think?
Here is a peek at another side. Love the candy… one of my favorite things about Halloween, too.
And here’s a look at the back of the house. All of these papers are from a single paper pad.
This is one of the stickers in the new collection… I thought it made a fun “Welcome” sign to hang on the house.
