Now, on to today’s featured find! Late May/early June is an incredibly busy time in my home because I have school-aged kids. We have end-of-the-year parties, field trips, concerts, and games, and it seems like we’re always in need of a quick gift for a teacher, coach, or parent helper.

Because shopping for gifts can become time-consuming and expensive in a hurry, I decided to make this handmade “thank you” gift for one of my daughter’s teachers. I simply covered a recycled cocoa canister with Chantilly Collection paper from Close To My Heart, added some of their unique embellishments, and filled the canister with the teacher’s favorite candy. I know this teacher loves to read, so I also created a pretty bookmark to go with the treat. Both projects came together in about 30 minutes, great when you have multiple kids and multiple teachers to thank.

To finish the canister, I adhered Hollyhock Zipper Lace (my new favorite trim!) around the top edge and tore a strip of polka-dot For Always Textiles fabric to make the bow. I used mini adhesive dots to secure both embellishments, and trimmed them with the new Non-Stick Micro-Tip Scissors. The scissors get right between the zipper teeth, and I didn’t have to worry about them sticking to my adhesive. The label is perfect for a teacher gift because it’s a Close To My Heart Chalkboard Shapes sticker! Write on them with Close To My Heart’s Chalk Marker to add trendy chalkboard style to any project.

For the bookmark, I wanted it to have real textural appeal, so I cut a 15” length of Close To My Heart Burlap Ribbon and folded it in half. I cut a 1-1/4”x7-1/2” strip of Cotton Candy cardstock, which coordinates with the Chantilly paper, and adhered that inside the layers of burlap using a tape runner. Next, I cut a “v” from the ribbon end opposite the fold. I used the scissors tip to make a small hole through the layers near the fold and inserted an 8” length of hemp baker’s twine from the Mini-Medley Accents Wooden Collection through the hole to make the streamer. I finished the bookmark with a crocheted flower and a metal button from the Mini-Medley Accents Antiqued Gold Collection, a strip of the Zipper Lace, and a strip of the torn For Always Textiles fabric.

I hope you enjoyed today’s projects and this peek into some of Close To My Heart’s new products for spring and summer crafting. Please visit them online at for product information, projects, tips, and more.

  14. The best handmade item I ever received was a hand crocheted bedspread cover made by my great grandmother. It is truly an heirloom that my grandmother gave to my mother and she gave to me. It is crotcheted with ecru cotton string. Being a crocheted myself, I cannot imagine how many hours she spent doing this. A real la or of love.

  15. Hmmm … the best handmade gift I have ever received. I’d have to say my last anniversary card. My husband said he couldn’t find what he liked at the local Hallmark store and asked if he could go “use stuff” in my craft room. While I couldn’t believe it was happening, he actually went in there (I took pictures of course!) and he made me an anniversary card. I can’t tell you how much that meant to me.

  16. One cherished hand made card my grand daughter gave to me (raising her now-mom passed 05) was when she was in 2nd grade and she made me a Happy Birthday card to my Mom. You have no idea what that meant. Most bittersweet moment — Now of course, she is just my 14 yr old brat LOL

  20. The best presents I ever got were the elementary school gifts from my sons – in particular, a bird bath made from terra cotta pot and planter (small) painted white, and my youngest put flowers on it, and glued a little feather bird to it. And yes, I would love your prize in my house !

  21. My mom knitted me blankets and sweaters for my kids when they where born. Those kind of gifts are always the best. My CTMH contact made me the 3D frame for my 25th wedding Anv it game out so nice. I think I could make something very cute if I win. Thanks.

  22. My friend introduced me to scrapbooking. My favorite thing to make is cards and always commented and admired her collection of cards that she makes. For my 40th birthday she decorated a cardbox for me. To my surprise she filled it with all the cards she had been making over the last couple of years. What a great friend!

  23. Love burlap!!! Makes “handmade” so much more special!!! Adding the beautiful ribbon just makes it pop….

  24. Really cute gift. I received a small quilt with 4 individual Precious Moments cross stitch set in. This was made by 4 friends about 25 yrs ago & hangs in my guest today.

  25. I have received so many handmade gifts and I love them all, but the most useful are the scissors holders that are made out of hot pads. I have several in my kitchen (the scissors still disappear, though).
The burlap ribbon and cotton candy zipper lace look like fun to use!

  26. My friend made me a mail/file holder. She covered the raw product in beautiful paper and added pearls and flowers. It was simple yet beautiful.

  27. My favorite handmade gift is still my son’s plaster handprint he made for me in preschool for Mother’s Day.

  28. The best homemade gift I have received is a framed scrapbook page from my dil, showcasing a photo of her and me on her wedding day.

  31. Love this! It came together really well for a quick 30m project!!

Best handmade gift… That’s a tough question. Things my son has made, my husband, those are always the best. But there’s a gift I still use and treasure, a friend made a bathroom rug out of white/blue yarn for our wedding and I still use it (our 15th anniversary is coming up in 2 months!)

  32. Great ideas for using these products!

My best handmade gift – coordinating winter coat, snow pants, hat, mittens and scarf that my mother knitted for me when I was a toddler. I only recently was able to part with it. It must have taken quite a bit of her spare time when she had three children less than 10 years old at home. A gift of love.

  34. My mom made me a gorgeous porcelain doll when I was 12! I inherited her crafty side! I would love to win!!

  35. My most treasured handmade gift is a quilt my mother made for me using squares her mother and other relatives made by embroidering their names, date and sometype of figure/flower in the square. All the relation that made these squares have all passed away. It is a great family treasure.

  36. My Grandmother made me a teddy bear when I was 2. I still have it and it looks great 42 years later!

  37. I would love to win these items. The best handmade gift I ever received was from my Father-in-law. He made a wedding ring quilt for me and a quilt for each of my children. Now that he has passed when we get them out we try to tell a story about him. Memories and the quilts are all we have left. But it is enough until we see him again!

  38. This may sound odd, but the best handmade gift I ever received was one that I made myself! I had made my grandmother a cross-stitched ornament with Santa on it when I was younger. After she passed away, my mother found it and returned it to me, telling me that she would have wanted me to have it. I had not even remembered making it, but I now have it hung on my bulletin board year-round!

  39. The best handmade gift I’ve ever received was a scrapbook album my mom made for me while my son was in the NICU. It had all the milestones marked,. (when he came off the vent, his first bottle, when he came home, etc, etc) Such a great gift!

  40. As much as I love paper hand-crafted items, I’ll have to be honest and say the best hand-made gift I received was when my best friend made me a from-scratch blackberry cobbler–my FAVORITE!

  41. The best home made gift was a wedding album my husband’s niece made for us. It was the first scrapbook I had ever had, from that moment on I fell in love with scrapbooking and card making. Seventeen yrs later and 32 albums later I am still loving it. I have sold Close To My Heart products now or 7 years.
