Crocheted Animal Booties

Crafts ’n things Craft of the Day

Your little ones will love these delightful animal booties! Just crochet and then whipstitch them to a purchased pair of infant socks.

Materials

  • Infant socks in coordinating color, 1 pair each
  • Sport-weight yarn (for elephant), 2.5 oz.: light blue, 1 skein; pale blue, 1 skein; black, small amount for facial features
  • Sport-weight yarn (for lion), 2.5 oz.: light yellow, 1 skein; yellow, 1 skein; white, black, light blue, small amount of each color for facial features

Tools

  • Crochet hook, size E/4 (3.50mm)
  • Yarn needle

Special Technique – Loop Stitch

  • 1. Insert hook in st, wrap yarn counterclockwise around first finger of left hand, insert hook from right to left through both loops on finger; adjusting yarn to loop size called for in instructions, pull through st, drop loop, yarn over and pull through loops on hook. See Fig. 1.

 

Gauge

6 sc = 1”; 6 sc rows = 1”

Do not join at end of each rnd unless otherwise indicated.

Elephant Booties (make two)

1. Starting at bottom of sole with light blue yarn, ch 21.

2. Rnd 1. Sc in second ch from hook and in each ch to end of row; working down opposite side on starting ch, sc in each ch. [40 sc]

3. Rnd 2. (2 sc in next sc, sc in each of the next 18 sc, 2 sc in next sc) two times. [44 sc]

4. Rnd 3. (2 sc in next sc, sc in each of the next 20 sc, 2 sc in next sc) two times. [48 sc]

5. Rnd 4. (2 sc in next sc, sc in each of the next 22 sc, 2 sc in next sc) two times [52 sc]

6. Rnds 5-7. Sc in each sc around. [52 sc]

7. Rnd 8. Working in front loop only for this rnd, sc in each st around; fasten off light blue yarn. [52 sc]

8. Rnd 9. Working in back loops of Rnd 7 for this rnd, join pale blue yarn with sc in next st, sc in each sc around. [52 sc] (Note: This round creates a ridge around bootie.)

9. Rnd 10. Sc in each of the next three sc, *(slip st, ch 3, 8 tr, ch 3, slip st) in front loop of next sc for ear*, sc in each of the next 44 sc, repeat between *’s one time for second ear, sc in each of the next three sc.

10. Rnd 11. Sc in each sc around, working in back loop of Rnd 9 at each ear. [52 sc]

11. Rnd 12. Sc in each of the next 12 sc, skip next 28 sc, sc in remaining 12 sc. [24 sc] (Note: This round creates the back of the elephant head.)

12. Rnds 13-14. To begin face, sc in each sc around. [24 sc]

13. Rnd 15. *Sc in next sc, skip next sc, sc in next sc; repeat from * around. [16 sc]

14. Rnd 16. Sc in each sc around. [16 sc]

15. Rnd 17. To begin trunk, *sc in next sc, skip next sc; repeat from * around. [8 sc]

16. Rnds 18-21. Sc in each sc around. Fasten off at end of Rnd 21. Weave in loose ends.

Lion Booties (make two)

1. With light yellow, ch 21. Repeat Rnds 1-7 of Elephant, dropping light yellow yarn at end of Rnd 7. Do not fasten off.

2. Rnd 8. Join yellow yarn in same st where light yellow yarn was dropped, ch 1, turn; working around bootie in opposite direction from Rnds 1-7, work 1/2” loop st (see Special Technique – Loop Stitch) in each sc around; join with a slip st in beginning st. Fasten off tellow yarn. [52 sts]

3. Rnd 9. Pick up light yellow, ch 1, turn; working around bootie in same direction as Rnds 1-7, sc in each st around. [52 sc]

4. Rnd 10. Sc in each of the next two sc, *(slip st, hdc) in front loop of next sc, (dc, tr) in front loop of next sc, (tr, dc) in front loop of next sc, (hdc, slip st) in front loop of next sc for ear*, sc in each of the next 40 sc, repeat between *’s one time for second ear, sc in each of the remaining two sc.

5. Rnd 11. Sc in each sc around, working in back loops of Rnd 9 at each ear. [52 sc]

6. Rnd 12. Sc in each of the next 12 sc, skip next 28 sc, sc in each of the remaining 12 sc. [24 sc] (Note: This round creates the back of the lion head.)

7. Rnds 13-14. To begin face, sc in each sc around. [24 sc]

8. Rnd 15. *Sc in next sc, skip next sc, sc in next sc; repeat from * around. [16 sc]

9. Rnd 16. Sc in each sc around. [16 sc]

10. Rnd 17. *Sc in next sc, skip next sc; repeat from * around. [8 sc]

11. Rnd 18. Slip st in every other sc around until four sc remain. Fasten off; weave in loose ends.

facial features

1. For elephant’s face, use black yarn to make one French knot for each eye and two straight stitches to define top of eye; see Fig. 2. Backstitch a U-shaped smile beneath trunk.

2. For Lion’s face, see Fig. 3. For each eye, work one chain with white and another chain with light blue inside it for iris; work two straight stitches with black for center of eye. Define top of eye with two straight stitches with black. For top of nose, work four chains on each side with yellow yarn, forming an upside down “V.” With black, satin stitch nose; backstitch mouth.

3. For whiskers, thread yarn needle with four strands of white yarn. Insert needle from side to side behind nose; remove needle. Knot ends together on each side of nose. Trim whiskers to length desired. Tack bottom of mouth to instep of bootie.

Finishing

1. Slip one sock into each bootie with toe at animal’s head. Turn sock cuff downward halfway to outside of bootie.

2. With yarn needle and coordinating yarn, whipstitch cuff to bootie, stitching between ribs of cuff; be sure to stretch sock cuff while sewing for a better fit.

4. Rnd 3: Ch 3, dc in next 2 dc. *(Ch 2, dc in next sp) twice; ch 2, dc in next 3 dc. Rep from * around. End with sl st in top of ch-3.

Joining Medallions

1. Join medallions on 9th round. (Note: Medallion in-progress is A; medallion being joined is B). Work Rnd 9 to first corner.

2. Dc in ch-2 sp, ch 1, sc in corresponding sp on B; ch 1, ch in same ch-2 sp on A.

3. *Ch 1, sc in next sp on B, ch 1, sc in next sp on A. Continue from * across to corner and join as for first corner. Continue Rnd 9 around.

Joining Multiple Medallions

1. When joining to more than one medallion, work corners as follows: Dc in ch-2 sp on A, ch 1, sc in corresponding sp on B; ch 1, sc in corresponding sp on third medallion; ch 1, dc in same ch-2 sp on A. Continue joining to adjacent side of third medallion and work across.

2. To complete afghan, join 27 medallions: five in Row 1, six in Row 2, five in Row 3, six in Row 4, and five in Row 5. Do not fasten off after finishing Rnd 9 of last medallion.

Edging

1. Row 1: Ch 6, (dc in next dc, ch 3) to corner. Work dc, ch 2, dc in ch-2 sp, (ch 3, dc in next dc) along side. Where medallions are joined at corners, work dc in dc before join, ch 1, dc in dc following join, and continue ( ).

2. Row 2: Ch 5, dc in next dc. (Ch 2, dc in next dc) around. Work corners as for Row 1. In sp above medallion joins, work dc in dc before ch-1 sp, ch 3, dc in ch-1 sp, ch 3, dc in next dc. Continue around. Fasten off.

3. Use yarn needle to weave in all ends
