Cocoa Daisy Kit Club & Giveaway

Hello Crafts ‘n things friends! It’s Jill Cornell with you today, and I am continuing my blog series where I interview a kit club owner. It’s a great way to learn more about these scrapbooking and paper crafting clubs plus have the opportunity to win that month’s kit!

Today, we’re going to meet Christine Drumheller, the owner of Cocoa Daisy.

1)      When did you start your kit club? And what made you decide to go into business?

Cocoa Daisy was founded about seven years ago by Tricia Canonico. I first joined Cocoa Daisy, as a subscriber, in 2007.

I tried out when Cocoa Daisy had a Design Team call, made the team, and about six months later, Tricia asked me to start creating the project kits. I loved coming up with ideas for the project kits and putting them together! Soon I was joining Tricia on her trips to CHA, so I got a good idea of how much work goes into putting together the main kit. Well, fast forward to 2010. I found myself having to leave my marriage of 11 years, with no work history for the last eight because I’d been a stay-at-home mom. At that time, Tricia happened to be pregnant, moving to another state, and planning to close things down here at Cocoa Daisy. I approached her and said I wanted to do it! I was terrified… leaving a marriage, moving in with my parents, and starting a business all at the same time. That was the worst, most stressful summer of my life! But, I knew I had to give it a try because it was the perfect scenario for me. I’d be doing something I love and I’d also be home with the boys.

My background in graphic design from before I became engaged, including 10 years’ experience as a Composition Manager, gave me the confidence to jump in and pray that God had placed this opportunity in front of me for a reason.

It’s been an amazing three years! Learning as I go, always trying to make changes and improvements, working to get the kits out on time and to give my 100% to customer service has been more than stressful at times, BUT I wouldn’t change a thing!

2) Do you offer subscriptions? What does a subscription entail?

Yes, we offer subscriptions! We offer 6 month subscriptions to our Main kit, which is more for the traditional paper crafter/scrapbooker, we offer a Day in the Life kit subscription for those that enjoy working in a project life style format and we also offer a Stamp subscription which is the perfect accompaniment to our other subscriptions or for anyone who enjoys stamping. We also offer a 3 month subscription option, where you can sign up for 3 months by paying for all three months in advance with no auto renewal. It’s a great option for those wishing to give a kit club a try or if you are concerned about committing for 6 months.

When you sign up for a subscription you are guaranteed the monthly kit, early access to any add-ons or special project kits and all your add-on purchases will ship free with your subscription. We are also running a special promotion right now, subscribe to either the Main kit or Day in the Life kit and receive a free “Orion” or “Milky Way” November add on. New subscriptions will begin with the November kit.

3) Do you offer a one-time purchase option?

Yes! You can purchase the main kit or the Day in the Life kit as a single purchase. You can also purchase any of the stamps from our Stamp Subscription as single purchases.

Here is an example from Christine Drumheller:

4) Do you ship internationally?

Yes we do, Main kit shipping to Canada is $13.50 all other international is $20.00; Day in the Life kit shipping to Canada is $9.00 all other international is $14.50

5) Do you offer add-ons?

Yes. Every month we offer two main add-ons and a patterned paper add-on that coordinate with the Main and Day in the Life kits. Our Day in the Life kit can also be ordered as an add-on. We offer a monthly Project Art kit add-on for those that enjoy mixed media/art journaling. Occasionally we offer special project kit add-ons, like this month we have a Christmas Day in the Life kit to help you record your Holiday moments in the project life format and we also have a Document December mini album kit.

6) What does a typical kit look like (i.e. how many sheets of cardstock? patterned paper? alphabets? embellishments)? Describe it for us.

Every Main kit has 8-9 sheets of patterned paper, 4 sheets of cardstock, 1-2 alphabets and lots of embellishments! Rather than include just a couple full packs of embellishments we prefer to create goodie bags for each kit with a wider range of embellishments.  Each kit also includes a 3×4 custom letterpress card and stamp or stamp set.

Every Day in the Life project life kit has 12 exclusive cards designed by Stephanie Wheeler, 12 cards designed by Eve from Evalicious, 4-6  4″x6″ cardstock and/or lined cards, exclusive stamp set, flair, wood veneer, two 3″x4″ letterpress cards, at least one alpha sheet, and various other embellishments.

Here is a card example from Christine Drumheller:

7) What sets you apart from the competition? Do you offer exclusives?
Our kits are very cohesive and being the mom of boys I try very hard to make sure that each month’s kit is “gender neutral”. The paper and embellishments can work together in a number of different ways which gives our kits great versatility. The other thing that sets us apart is our excellent customer service. I value each and every one of my customers and strive to give them the consideration and service that I would expect. People work hard for their money and I want to make sure they feel good about spending it at Cocoa Daisy. I want each customer to enjoy opening their Daisy box when it arrives on their doorstep :)

Yes, we have exclusives! In fact this month’s kit includes the most exclusives we have ever had in a kit. We are now designing our own patterned paper and each kit has two sheets of exclusive Cocoa Daisy paper in it, we have an exclusive 3″x4″ beautiful letterpress card, flair (this month it is from Panda 8 Designs), a set of page tabs from Evalicious, wood veneer, stamp set, and this month we even have a gorgeous 6″x6″ custom stencil from Crafter’s Workshop which coordinates perfectly with the kit.

Here is a look at the Day in the Life kit:

8) Do you appeal to a wide range of papercrafters? Who is your audience? (Scrapbookers, project lifers, card makers, altered and mixed media artists?)

We have something for everyone! Our Main kit can really be used for everything but is primarily for those who choose to scrapbook in the traditional format. Our Day in the Life kit is perfect for anyone who prefers to scrapbook in a project life format. For our mixed media customers we offer a Project Art Starter kit, perfect for anyone wishing to pursue art journaling (the Starter Kit even includes admission to Ronda Palazarri’s introduction to art journaling class) and then each month we offer a different Project Art add on. And for card makers and stampers we offer either a stamp subscription which includes three different stamp or stamp sets each month.

9) Do you have a design team? How can subscribers and others find inspiration with your kit?

We have an amazing design team! We have design team members that create in all these styles; clean and linear, messy and artsy, lots of layers, project life, art journaling, mini books, a little bit of everything really. We always post lots of great ideas on our blog, Facebook, instagram and of course on our message boards. In fact, we just had our annual online crop this last weekend and the Design Team out did themselves with all the challenges, examples and classes that were posted. You can check out the challenges and classes here.

Here is an example from design team member, Alissa Fast:

Great Finds Friday: New Craft Books

Welcome to Great Finds Friday, Crafters! Today’s Great Finds are three new craft books that have me so excited for holiday gift-giving. They’re all filled with inspired, creative designs that my friends and family members will enjoy and use. I’m also excited because I get to give these books away to 12 lucky Crafts ‘n things blog readers just in time for holiday crafting!

All Things Paper: 20 Unique Projects from Leading Paper Crafters, Artists, and Designers by Ann Martin, Tuttle Press, ISBN: 9780804843669, $16.95. Step inside the studios of paper artists around the world inside All Things Paper. From home décor designs like the Phone Book Letter Holder to the Citrus Slice Coasters, techniques are varied and intriguing. I think my favorite project in this chapter is the Sticky Notes Notepad Holder, which features a hand-stitched, beaded cover; no more boring yellow pads for me. Fashion accessories include a lush Tiger Lily Fascinator, those chic-and-tiny hats worn by the royals, and an eco-chic Everyday Tote Bag made from brown paper grocery bag handles. Jewelry designs include an assortment of beautiful pendant designs you won’t believe are crafted from paper, as well as an excellent quilling tutorial and a necklace crocheted from paper yarn. Who knew?! Cards and a lovely journal finish out the correspondence section.

The Sparkle Factory: The Design and Craft of Tarina’s Fashion Jewelry and Accessories by Tarina Tarantino, Running Press, ISBN: 9780762446896, $23.00. One-time model and makeup artist Tarina Tarantino is better known for her famous global jewelry, accessory, and cosmetic brand of the same name. In her new book, she shares the design secrets behind 20 of her most coveted pieces including statement earrings, cocktail rings, hair jewelry, stretch cuff bracelets, and more. As she tells her personal story, she also shares her tips and advice on everything from finding inspiration and materials, to freeing your inner designer, wearing jewelry, and displaying it in your home. Tarantino’s pieces have been worn by top Hollywood stars and featured in top women’s magazines. The Paris Apartment Cocktail Ring is one of my favorite designs for two reasons, simplicity and sparkle. Artist Tarantino describes her inspiration: “Taking a simple ball of clay and turning it into a couture fashion cocktail ring in minutes is instant fashion gratification at its best! The secret of this project is the swirling of the clay colors to create beautiful patterns and designs. No two rings are ever the same!” With just a few supplies, you can create custom baubles for all the women on your gift list.

Snowflakes, Sunbursts, and Stars: 75 Exquisite Paper Designs to Fold, Cut, and Curl by Ayako Brodek and Shannon Voigt, Kodansha USA, ISBN: 9781568365220, $25.95. From delicate, intricate snowflakes to bold, colorful sunbursts and unique stars, readers will discover countless ways to use the core techniques of origami, kirigami, and quilling to create pieces that make perfect home accents, holiday decorations, package toppers, and other personal, paper-crafted gifts. Fully illustrated in vivid color, the book provides experienced and new paper crafter alike the information, tools, and basics they need to get started, beginning with a gallery of 75 designs. Each section is ordered by level of difficulty, so you can build your skills with each new project. I am creating snowflake garlands for my living room windows now, so I’ll be ready for winter when it shows its frosty face. There’s nothing more beautiful than pretty paper snowflakes hanging in a warm, cozy room.

For a chance to WIN one of these wonderful craft books, leave a comment on this blog post before November 22nd. Tell me your favorite thing about the upcoming winter holidays. Winners will be announced in the next Great Finds Friday post then.

Good luck and happy crafting!

Great Finds Friday: Chic Home Dec, Fab Tools from FloraCraft®

Welcome to another Great Finds Friday, Crafters! Today, I’m going to share three exciting new creative options from FloraCraft®, makers of Make It: Fun® Foam. You’ll also get a chance to win a $50 FloraCraft® gift card, plus an opportunity to earn another $50 if a project you create with your prize gets published!

First, we have to take a look at the new three-piece Make It: Fun® Foam Tools set. I love craft tools, gadgets, etc., because I know great ones will make my creative process easier and more enjoyable. That gets me crafting more often, which is always good. This new tool kit includes three handy plastic tools for creating new shapes and textures out of craft foam. The Rasp has a rough side for gently smoothing the foam’s finish, rounding rough edges, and smoothing out cut marks. The easy-to-grip, serrated Knife smoothly cuts through foam. The Tuck & Scribe tool has a rounded end to etch patterns into foam, and a pointed end that is designed for tucking fabric pieces, felt, or ribbons into foam to create an all-over fabric finish without pins or glue. The tools are kid-friendly, too, and have a suggested retail value of $3.99 for the set of three. I think these would make ideal party favors at a crafty girls-night-in event!

One of my favorite new FloraCraft® products is the Design It:® LED Light Strand. You can add it to your dried and silk floral arrangements, even submerse it in a water-filled fresh arrangement. Place your completed floral design in a dark corner of your home to provide a soft light, or use it to bring a festive glow to the dinner table at holiday or everyday gatherings. These lights would be gorgeous entwined in evening reception table arrangements, too. Everything looks better by candlelight, and these tiny, sparkling, battery-operated lights give you that effect. Imagine them peeking out through pine boughs decorating your holiday mantle or bannister; because they have attached battery packs, finding a conveniently placed outlet is never a problem!  And battery packs can be refilled when needed for long-time use. The 34-1/2”-long LED Light Strand contains 15 warm white lights perfect for topiaries, plants, floral arrangements, and water-filled vases. Suggested retail price is $5.99. FloraCraft® also offers Design It:® LED Lighted Branches, not shown, as another creative illumination option; they retail for $7.99. You can learn more on the FloraCraft® website.

Design It:® SimpleStyle® Decorative Mesh from FloraCraft® bends easily and holds its shape, making it perfect for creating wreaths, bows, garlands, and other dimensional accents for home or special events. Metallic strands woven throughout provide extra sparkle to anything you drape, wrap, or tie with Decorative Mesh. Tie bows around chair backs for a festive event venue, loop and pin one or more colors together on a foam wreath form, or add mesh to wall hangings and gift packages. Crafts ‘n things Weekly featured this darling mesh-topped Gift Box Topiary in the October 9th issue; simply cover foam cubes with decorative paper and top with Decorative Mesh curls and bows for instant Christmas WOW! Decorative Mesh is available in 6” and 10” widths on 10-yard spools in the colors shown below. Suggested retail price is $6.99 and $7.99 respectively.

Remember to visit the www.makeitfuncrafts.com website for craft projects and the www.designitflowers.com website for floral arranging how-tos from the talented design teams at FloraCraft®, and learn more about the rest of their expanded product line. You’ll also find hundreds of easy, creative project ideas for decorating your home, gifting, entertaining, and engaging your kids in non-electronic fun.

For your chance to WIN the $50 FloraCraft® gift card, first register right now on the Crafts ‘n things  website so you don’t miss future issues of Crafts ‘n things Weekly and the Craft of the Day projects. Both are free to you, even if you haven’t subscribed to the magazine yet – and we’d love to have you as a subscriber. Next, leave a comment here telling me your favorite craft idea for holiday gift-giving. I’d love to hear from you! And be sure to LIKE Crafts ‘n things and FloraCraft on Facebook to get current news, tips, and even more great craft ideas at your fingertips.

One additional winner will win a mini prize pack of the Foam Tools, one LED Light Strand, and one roll of Decorative Mesh.

Both winners will be announced on our blog and our Facebook page on Friday, November 8th! Good luck and happy crafting!

More Kit Clubs and Giveaways

Hello Crafts ‘n things friends! It’s Jill Cornell with you today, and I am continuing my blog series where I interview two kit club owners. It’s a great way to learn more about these scrapbooking and paper crafting clubs plus have the opportunity to win that month’s kit!

First, let’s meet Noel Fabbri, the owner of Noel Mignon – with fabulous monthly scrapbooking and Project Life-style kits.

1) When did you start your kit club? And what made you decide to go into business?

I started making kits in the Fall of 2006, so it has been seven years now. At the time, I had three little boys at home (my oldest son was 5 and my twins were 3). I had been immersed in all things “baby” for years and found myself really missing adult interaction, and my job, which I had left upon the birth of my oldest son in 2001. After interacting in the online forums of many of the larger scrapbook sites, I decided at first to just open a small online shop, carrying the lines that I most liked to work with. I am lucky that my husband is a “tech guy”, so he built a website for me, I got all my business paperwork taken care of, and off I started on my journey. Scrapbook kits were just emerging at the time, and so I thought I would have a go at that, and seven years later…here we are. The process of designing the kits has really become a passion for me and one that I thoroughly enjoy each and every month!

2) Do you offer subscriptions? What does a subscription entail?

Currently, I offer 6-month subscription spots for my large, monthly kit. The monthly fee also includes USPS priority shipping, or an $11.50 credit toward international shipping per month. Subscription spots for the January–June kits are currently open, and can be secured HERE

3) Do you offer a one-time purchase option?

I always hold a handful of kits each month, for anyone who wants to pick one up.

Here is an example from design team member, Virginia Tillery:

4) Do you ship internationally?

Yes

5) Do you offer add-ons?

I currently offer a smaller Project Life-type kit each month, which coordinates with the colors and themes I have working in the big kit. I also occasionally offer a class kit, which I also currently have available. This class is a Halloween Mini Album kit/class hosted by our DT member Cassandra Cyr.

6) What does a typical kit look like (i.e. how many sheets of cardstock? patterned paper? alphabets? embellishments)? Describe it for us.

BIG…lol!  My kits always have 20 pieces of patterned paper with 5 matching cardstock sheets. I always include one Thickers alphabet, and one smaller cardstock-type alpha. While I do not have my own stamps (which seems to be a trend), I always include a set from the top designers (Amy Tangerine, Dear Lizzy, Jenni Bowlin, etc…). I also like to incorporate a “staple” item each month, be it a mist, an ink, a pen…, items that you can add to your arsenal of scrap tools. I include lots of embellishments each month, from ribbon, to stickers, to washi tape, to enamel dots. My embellishment list is usually comprised of 20-25 items, and I like to have it vary from month to month, so the kits don’t feel like a rerun of the last one.

Here is an example from design team member, Julie Bonner, using the Union Square kit:

7) What sets you apart from the competition? Do you offer exclusives?

I would say the size and value of the kits is what sets me apart. I am also going to say the way I coordinate items. I have gotten lots of very nice emails and notes about the way I put them together, which I think sets my kits apart from the others. I think they are the perfect way for people who live in an area without a great LSS (local scrapbook store), or who just don’t have time to get out to the store, to have a beautiful box of supplies arrive at the door and to be assured that the one kit they purchase from me is going to be more than enough to last until the next one arrives.

8) Do you appeal to a wide range of papercrafters? Who is your audience? (Scrapbookers, project lifers, card-makers, altered and mixed media artists?)

I seem to be geared most towards the tried-and-true 12″x12″ scrapbooker. The people who love to crop and just want to grab their kit bags and know they can make 15 LO’s (or more) with their one kit. . . although, the kits are very versatile, and they lend themselves beautifully to mini album making. You will always have leftovers, which are perfect for whipping up some cards. There is really more than enough included to choose your own path with the supplies.

9) Do you have a design team? How can subscribers and others find inspiration with your kit?

Yes, I have a wonderful design team and have always been very lucky with the designers who have agreed to share their talents while using my kits. Currently, my team is comprised of Virginia Tillery, Julie Bonner, Gretchen McElveen, Veronica Milan (Chic Tags), Cassandra Cyr, and Christie Engel Welch (Two Chicks Designs).

Here is an example from design team member, Gretchen McElveen:

Next, let’s meet Trina Craig, owner of Citrus Twist Kits, and get to know more about her monthly scrapbooking and “Pocket Life” kits.

1) When did you start your kit club? And what made you decide to go into business?

I started Citrus Twist Kits in May 2012. I come from a long line of female artists and after my mom passed away in January of 2012, the idea for CTK was born. We both shared a love of scrapbooking.

2) Do you offer subscriptions? What does a subscription entail?

We offer our Main and PL kits as subscriptions. Our minimum length subscription is 3 months. The Main kit is $32.50 per month for a 3-month subscription and $30.50 per month for a 6-month subscription (plus shipping). The PL kit is $18 per month, plus shipping. We call our PL kits “Pocket Life.”

Here is an example from Citrus Twist Kits’ design team:

3) Do you offer a one-time purchase option?

Our Main kit is offered as a one-time purchase at $35 (plus shipping). Our PL can be purchased one time as a past kit, if we have past kits in inventory.

4) Do you ship internationally?

Yes. All international shipping is $19. Subscribers can include add-ons and store items in with their kit shipment at no additional shipping cost.

5) Do you offer add-ons?

Yes! We offer 1 coordinating patterned paper add-on, a solid paper add-on, an embellishment add-on (1 for scrapbookers and 1 for PL’ers), and a full kit add-on. All the kits coordinate with the Main and PL kits, except for the full kit add-on.

6) What does a typical kit look like (i.e. how many sheets of cardstock? patterned paper? alphabets? embellishments)? Describe it for us.

Our typical main kit has 8 sheets of patterned paper and 4 solids, plus lots of embellishments. We offer great value for the amount of product our subscribers get. Our typical PL kit features a 6″x6″ paper pad plus lots of other goodies.

Here is an example from Citrus Twist Kits’ design team:

7) What sets you apart from the competition? Do you offer exclusives?

Our customer service is top notch. We love to give the kind of customer service that makes people happy. We also offer exclusives including flairs, stamps, wood veneer, PL cards, and a special, handcrafted vintage embellishment included in with each main kit.

8) Do you appeal to a wide range of papercrafters? Who is your audience? (Scrapbookers, project lifers, card-makers, altered and mixed media artists?)

We do appeal to a wide range of papercrafters, including card-makers. Many of our subscribers get both the main and PL kits together.

9) Do you have a design team? How can subscribers and others find inspiration with your kit?

We have a 12-person design team of which almost half are international. They play with our kits and give our blog readers and their own blog readers lots of inspiration with the art they create with their kits.

Here is an example from Citrus Twist Kits’ design team:

10) Link us up with your website, blog, Facebook, Pinterest, Twitter, Instagram, etc.

Morgan’s new book features a wonderful introduction that covers basic tools you’ll need to become a serious duct tape crafter, as well as tips for tool care and hints on creating your own duct tape “fabric.” Whether you have access only to solid-colored tapes, or you look online or in stores for beautiful patterned tapes like those from Platypus Designer Duct Tape, you’re guaranteed crafting success if you follow these easy, photo-illustrated project instructions.

Here’s a look at some of the patterns available from Platypus Designer Duct Tape; visit their website www.designerducttape.com to find many more, including cool duct tape kits.

Within the 10 project-filled chapters, Morgan provides inspired looks ranging from Accessories (like earrings, brooches, slippers, even duct tape shoelaces!) to Housewares (shower caddy, napkin rings, shoe mat, and the coolest wall umbrella holder – no more water dripping all over your entryway!). Other chapters include: Cushions, Pads, Mats, and Pillows; Decorative Stickers; Bags and Cases (think cool, trendy tablet holder); Flowers, Fruits, and Plants (no green thumb required); Toys (kids will love these handmade creations); Costumes (Halloween’s coming, plan a unique costume this year with creative duct tape style); Holiday (decorations, ornaments, hostess gifts); and Just for Fun (I’ve already made five Reusable Hot Beverage Sleeves using these instructions; we have a bit of a Starbucks “problem” in our house).

For a small investment, you can create countless duct tape gifts for upcoming holidays. Who doesn’t love to save some cash while creating something unique and delightful for family and friends?

For a chance to win your own copy of Tape It & Make MORE, leave a comment on the blog telling us the name of your favorite roll of tape from the Platypus Designer Duct Tape website. Five winners will each receive a copy of the book and a randomly chosen roll of Designer Duct Tape.

Winners will be announced in the next Great Finds Friday post on October 11th.

Good luck and happy taping!
