March is National Craft Month! Kick off this month-long celebration of all things crafty with Part II of our recap of new paper-crafting products introduced at the Winter CHA Show.

What’s hot in paper crafting? Here’s the scoop, fresh from the Craft & Hobby Association trade show held in January in Anaheim, California.

Becky Higgins’ Project Life easy scrapbooking system got much buzz. The no-stress system requires no glue, no scissors, no tools, and is “designed to help anyone and everyone get their pictures into a book.”

Picking up on the scrapbooking vibe, camera images, especially vintage and retro styles, were everywhere, from paper, stamps, and stencils to chipboard, wood, and other embellishments. We love the designs from American Crafts, Dear Lizzie, Maya Road, Simple Stories, Studio Calico (shown here), Amy Tangerine, Kaisercraft, Lawn Fawn, BasicGrey, Prima, Hero Arts (shown here) and others. Crate Paper has a nifty photo overlay (shown here) that gives an ordinary photo a trendy Instagram look.

Mini rulers are the cutest thing to come out of the schoolhouse since my third-grade crush! Tim Holtz’s Idea-ology offers a clever ruler binder kit, ruler ribbon, and a ruler-filled background stamp. Maya Road has mini rulers and Little Yellow Bicycle offers canvas ruler-marked tape.

We love the bold, graphic typography, especially with a vintage flair, popping up on stamps from 7gypsies (shown here), Hero Arts (shown here), Stampers Anonymous, Stampendous! (shown here), etc.

Washi tape, still yummy and plentiful, now comes in sheets you can cut, punch, die cut, etc. We found sheets at Lifestyle Crafts and We R Memory Keepers, fun tape-looking stamps from Hero Arts and Penny Black, and Scotch Brand decorative masking tape from 3M.

If you put all the bling shown at CHA in one room, you’ll need sunglasses. (We’re so thrilled with all the bejeweling that we’re devoting an entire article to jewels in the Fall 2013 issue of Crafts ‘n things). Besides jewels in every size, shape and color, there’s new corrugated glitter cardstock, neon glitter, and glitter tape from American Crafts; die-cut glittered papers from Anna Griffin; jeweled paper from Hampton Art Stamps; rhinestone and vinyl glitter sheets from The Buckle Boutique, and glitter and glitter glue galore from Ranger, American Crafts, WOW, Stampendous!, Martha Stewart Crafts and others.

If your stamp style is the polar opposite of cute, take heart! There are stamps that celebrate that aesthetic: Art Gone Wild (zombies, hipsters, and geeks), Inky Antics (worldly women, shown here), Dylusions (couture, eclectic, sayings, shown here), Wendy Vecchi Studio 490 (funny sayings), The Greeting Farm (sassy girls), JudiKins (a human skull you dress up with bowties, top hat, mustache), and more.

Trash-To-Treasure Framed Chalkboard

Transform tired framed art into a fabulous chalkboard. The picture inside this frame was flipped over to provide a chalkboard painting surface.

Materials

  • Large frame with ornate and embossed details
  • Krylon Spray Paints: Interior/Exterior Gloss Satin Brown Boots, Ivory; General Purpose Metallic Gold; Black Chalkboard Paint

Tools

  • Krylon Interior/Exterior White Primer
  • Sandpaper
  • Tack cloth
  • Hot glue gun and glue sticks

Basic Supplies

latex gloves, rag

Directions

(Note: Follow manufacturer’s instructions throughout.)

STEP 1

Remove picture from frame. Sand frame and wipe dust with tack cloth.

STEP 2

Wearing latex gloves to protect hands, spray paint smoothest side of picture with Black Chalkboard Paint; let dry.

STEP 3

Apply primer to frame; let dry. Spray Satin Brown Boots in swaths in random areas of frame; let dry. Spray embossed areas, such as corners, Metallic Gold; let dry.

STEP 4

Paint over frame with Ivory. While still wet, wipe some paint from detailed areas of frame with rag. Let dry.

STEP 5

Place chalkboard in frame; adhere on back with glue gun.

Etched Floral Vase

Make an elegant etched vase tonight with some quick etching and basic painting techniques. Etching first allows you to use regular acrylic paints on glass.

Materials

  • Square glass vase, 11” tall
  • Delta Ceramcoat Acrylic Paints: Medium Foliage Green, Light Foliage Green, Butter Yellow, Golden Brown, White, Deep Lilac, Territorial Beige, Bridgeport Grey, Royal Plum

Tools

  • Loew-Cornell Paintbrushes: Angular, Series 3400, 1/2”; Liner, Series 3350, #0; Filbert, Series 3500, #6
  • B&B Etching Products Etchall supplies: etching cream, 4 oz. bottle; straight knife; swivel knife; squeegee
  • Satin varnish
  • Oval template, 2-7/8”x4-5/8”
  • Self-adhesive vinyl

Basic Supplies

glass cleaner, lint-free cloth, ruler, marker, paper plate (for palette)

Directions

Note

Etching cream will permanently etch all glazed surfaces almost immediately, so avoid letting cream touch areas not to be etched, including porcelain sinks.

Vase

1. Use glass cleaner to clean vase. Dry with lint-free cloth.

2. To make stencils for oval and checkerboard, cut self-adhesive vinyl rectangles 1” larger than area to be etched. Remove paper backing and adhere vinyl to vase, using squeegee to smooth wrinkles and bubbles while applying. For checkerboard, use ruler and marker to mark two rows of 1/2” squares. Use straight knife to cut out alternating squares. For oval, use template and swivel knife to cut out with one long stroke, turning vase as needed.

3. Be sure edges of vinyl are tightly adhered, trimming “tails” as needed. Check for excess adhesive; rub off with finger if needed. Cover remaining areas not to be etched with vinyl to protect surface if desired.

4. Pour a generous amount of etching cream on area of vinyl where glass is not exposed. Use squeegee to pull cream over entire cut-out area, making sure glass is fully covered and cream is applied just beyond cut-out area. Let stand untouched for 15 minutes. Use squeegee to remove cream and return to container so it can be reused.

5. Rinse thoroughly under running water, being careful not to allow cream to run over unetched glass. (Caution: Use care when rinsing so that etching cream does not come in contact with any glazed surface, such as a porcelain sink.) With water running over area, remove vinyl from vase and dispose. Dry vase.

6. Cut out pattern. (Note: The blue word “pattern” is a link. To access this pattern, select the link, then download and print pattern.) Transfer pattern to etched area. To paint design, use worksheet as guide. Use liner brush and Medium Foliage Green to paint stems and curls. Double-load filbert with Medium Foliage Green and Light Foliage Green to paint leaves. Set brush down and pull to tip to create point. Use liner and Light Foliage Green to add highlights to stems and curls.

7. On paper plate, create three different shades of purple paint: Dusty Plum = (3:2:1:1) mixture of Deep Lilac + White + Territorial Beige + Bridgeport Grey; Dusty Purple = (3:2:*) mixture of Royal Plum + Territorial Beige + *small amount of Bridgeport Grey; Wisteria = (3:1:1) mixture of Deep Lilac + Territorial Beige + Bridgeport Grey. (Note: To help identify mixtures, use marker to label each mixture on paper plate with paint name.)

8. For lilacs, use filbert to basecoat Dusty Purple. Use filbert to tap in Wisteria. Repeat with Dusty Plum.

9. For bow, use filbert to basecoat Wisteria. Sideload with Dusty Plum to highlight loop tops; sideload with Dusty Purple to shade loop bottoms. Use liner and Dusty Purple to add detail lines.

10. For small flowers, use filbert to basecoat buds Butter Yellow. Sideload angular brush with Golden Brown to shade throat and base of bud. Use tip of liner and Golden Brown to add three dots to center of each bud.

11. Apply one coat of varnish to etched oval.

Everyone gets to be Irish on St. Patrick’s Day! This charming painted leprechaun sign is a fun and easy project that’s sure to get your family and friends in the St. Paddy’s Day spirit!

Materials

  • Chalkboard with unfinished wooden frame, 7″x10″

  • DecoArt Emperor’s Gold Dazzling Metallic Paint

  • Green satin ribbon, 1”-wide, 1/2 yd.

Leprechaun

1. Print patterns. (Note: The blue word “patterns” is a link. To access these patterns, select the link, then download and print patterns.) Transfer details, except face and ears, to heart. Paint head as follows: face Mocha, hair Gingerbread, collar and hat band White Wash, hat Bright Green. Drybrush edges of head with Dark Pine. Paint head plug (nose) Mocha. Transfer remaining details to head. Drybrush cheeks, nose, and inside ears with True Red. Dot cheeks White Wash. Draw eyes with bullet-tip black marker; draw smile and other stitch details with fine tip.

2. Transfer patterns to craft spoons (arms), craft sticks (legs), and rectangles (buckles). To make body, draw a horizontal line across one narrow end of chalkboard frame 2-3/4” down from top for waist; draw 1/2” wide vertical straps 1/2” in from each side. Paint as follows: hands Mocha, leggings and cuffs White Wash, shirt and sleeves Olive Green, overalls and tops of legs Bright Green. Paint bottom of legs and teardrops (shoes) Lamp Black. Paint rectangles (buckles) Lamp Black and Emperor’s Gold. Drybrush edges of body, arms, legs, shoes, and buckles with Dark Pine. Brush thin layer of craft glue over hat band, collar, and cuffs; sprinkle with glitter. Let dry.

3. Transfer pattern details to hands, reversing for right hand. Draw stitch details on overalls, arms, and legs with fine-tip black marker. Draw rounded uneven lines on leggings with bullet-tip green marker. Draw vertical lines on shirt and sleeves with fine-tip green marker. Transfer words to center of chalkboard. Using white marker, draw words and stitch line around chalkboard close to edge.

4. Transfer shamrock to green craft foam; cut out. Drybrush edges with Dark Pine. Dot with White Wash.

5. Adhere nose to face, head to top of body, arms to back of chalkboard, shoes to front of legs, and buckles to front of shoes. Adhere assembled legs to back of body. Adhere pom-pom to left side of hat. Adhere shamrock to hand on left. Let dry. Tie ribbon in a bow; cut ends in inverted “V”. Adhere bow to center of collar. Using hammer, attach sawtooth hanger to center top back of body.

Other Options

  • Use same pattern to create a Christmas elf in red and green. Make a matching ornament from craft foam.
  • For a simpler version, paint the chalkboard and adhere only the shamrock to it.
  • Instead of a sign, make a leprechaun photo frame for a proud Irish friend.

Take Time to Laugh Bowl & Mug

Steer away those mid-winter sniffles with a steaming mug of homemade soup served along with a friendly reminder to enjoy the lighter side of life.

Materials

  • Ceramic items: bowl, 7” diameter; mug with saucer, 3-3/4” tall
  • Plaid Apple Barrel Gloss Paints: Black, Beachcomber Beige, Mossy Green, Deep Purple, White

Tools

  • Paintbrushes: round brush, flat brush
  • Plaid Bottle Top Tip Writers (30728)

Basic Supplies

scissors, pencil, transfer paper, paper plate (for palette)

Directions

STEP 1

Wash and dry ceramic items. Print and cut out pattern. (Note: The blue word “pattern” is a link. To access this pattern, select the link, then download and print pattern.) Transfer vine pattern randomly around bottom of bowl and on mug.

STEP 2

Use round brush to paint the following: vines and leaves Mossy Green, berries on vines mix Deep Purple + White (1:1). Use flat brush to paint checkered border around bowl and saucer rims with Black and Beachcomber Beige.

STEP 3

Following manufacturer’s instructions, use bottle top tip writer and Black to free-hand paint lettering. Lightly spatter paint mug, saucer, and bowl with Black.

STEP 4

For increased durability, set can be baked in the oven. Follow manufacturer’s instructions on paint bottles.

Other Options

  • Use fabric paint to make a matching set of place mats and napkins.
  • Paint design on a vase for matching centerpiece.

Materials

Game

1. Use saw to cut ten 1-1/2” squares from basswood sheet. Use Easy Cutter to clip corners of each square.

2. Pull several 1/4” strips from Basswood Economy Bag. Cut six 3” lengths; leave two additional 1/4” strips uncut.

3. Paint five 1-1/2” squares Snow White. Using photo as guide, paint remaining squares Lamp Black on edges and Snow White in centers for penguins. Paint all 1/4” basswood strips Ultra Deep Blue. Paint plywood square Winter Blue. Let all pieces dry completely.

4. Print, cut out, and trace patterns onto Cellfoam as indicated. (Note: The blue word “patterns” is a link. To access these patterns, select the link, then download and print patterns.) Cut out pieces with craft knife.

5. Paint noses Jack-O’-Lantern Orange; let dry. Paint snowflakes Orchid; sprinkle paint with glitter while wet. Let dry.

6. Stamp Snow White snowflakes randomly over plywood square; let dry.

7. Adhere wiggle eyes and noses to game pieces, and use marker to outline pieces as shown.

8. Adhere 1/4″ basswood strips to board in grid pattern. Adhere snowflakes to board between strips. Adhere magnets to snowflakes and to back of each game piece. Let dry completely.

Tip

  • Paint the game pieces to look like zoo animals, dinosaurs, or anything else your kids love!

Valentine Candle Jar

Burn this candle to show your loving thoughts are aglow for that special someone who warms your soul!

Materials

  • Glass items: recycled quart jar, votive candle holder with lid
  • DecoArt Liquid Rainbow Glass Paints: Burgundy Blast, Fuchsia, Tickled Pink
  • DecoArt Liquid Rainbow Black Liquid Leading
  • Burgundy ribbon, 1⁄8”, one yard
  • Buttons, one each: hot pink, 3⁄4” ; pink, 1⁄2” ; light pink, 1⁄2”
  • Red votive candle

Tools

  • DecoArt Liquid Rainbow Styrene Painting Blank

Basic Supplies

scissors, masking tape, straight pin

Directions

STEP 1

Print and cut out pattern. Tape pattern to underside of leading blank; trace lines with leading. Repeat for two “sets” of hearts. Let dry 1-2 hours.

STEP 2

Follow manufacturer’s instructions to fill in: one heart Tickled Pink; two hearts Fuchsia; two hearts Burgundy Blast. (Note: Use pin to pop large air bubbles.) Fill in candle holder lid with Burgundy Blast; let dry 24 hours.

STEP 3

Carefully peel hearts from blank; apply to jar. Cut three 12” lengths from ribbon; tie around jar and trim ends at angle. Adhere buttons over knot; let dry. Insert candle holder into jar and candle into holder.

Other Options

  • Place hearts on window, mirror, vase, or any glass surface.
  • Make other holiday decorations in same way. Use coloring book pictures as patterns.

Watercolor Coffee Filter Roses

You can create these gorgeous watercolor roses in any shade. Each one is made from four inexpensive coffee filters, then painted with Sakura of America Koi watercolor paints.

Materials

  • Sakura of America Koi Watercolors (tube)
  • Cone coffee filters, four per rose
  • Printer paper
  • Floral wire, 20-gauge
  • Green floral tape

Tools

  • Paintbrush
  • Wire cutters
  • Glue stick

Basic Supplies

scissors, pencil, ruler, bamboo skewer, measuring spoon, newspaper (to cover work surface), poster board (optional), hair dryer (optional)

Directions

(Note: This project was inspired by a project on the Martha Stewart Show, but has been simplified.)

Making Roses

1. Print two copies of patterns onto printer paper. (Note: The blue word “patterns” is a link. To access these patterns, select the link, then download and print patterns.) To create sturdy pattern templates, use glue stick to adhere one set of patterns to poster board before cutting out pieces on black lines. Keep second set of patterns intact to use as placement guides.

2. Place petal shapes onto four coffee filters as shown. Trace petals and lightly number with pencil near base. Cut out petals, cutting through both layers of coffee filter. (Note: Because coffee filters are thin, several filters may be cut at once to save time; be sure filters are facing the same direction and keep numbered pieces together in plastic cups or bags for future use.)

3. For each flower, cut seven 2-1/2” lengths of floral tape; set aside. Cut 15” wire length for stem.

4. To assemble rose, begin with petal #1. Poke wire down between right-hand petals until 5” length extends above petals. Loop wire tip around and poke back down through base of right-hand petals. Pinch loop slightly and gently tug wire down to secure first petal and prevent it from sliding up and down stem.

5. Fold right-hand petal inward and roll to coil entire piece around stem. Secure base of petal with shorter end of wire.

6. Add petal #2 in same way. Poke wire down between right-hand petals. Arrange petals so they fill empty spaces between first petals. Roll and secure with piece of floral tape. When applying tape, stretch piece while pulling to get good, tight hold around base.

7. Add petal #3 in same way as petal #2.

8. Petal #4 needs to be separated first. Gently tear along bottom of petal to make flat strip, then wrap strip around rose and secure with tape.

9. Get two #5 petals and two #6 petals. (Note: Since these petals weren’t cut on fold, there are two of each one.) Fan out four pieces like a hand of cards. Place rose in center and wrap petals around rose. Secure base with tape.

10. Repeat Step 9 using two #7 and two #8 petals.

11. If desired, wrap entire stem in floral tape for more realistic look.

12. Starting with outer petals, fan out petals, bending gently backward from base.

Painting Roses

1. Blend small amount of paint with approximately one tablespoon of water on palette. Paint petals, starting at center and working outward. (Note: To save time, dip entire rose in base color rather than applying with brush.)

2. Add second color while rose is still wet. This color needs to be more concentrated than first color; add water to paint with brush rather than tablespoon. Run tip of brush along edge of each petal to deposit color.

3. Hang rose upside down over protected surface; hanging preserves shape of petals. Allow rose to dry for at least three hours; to speed drying, use hair dryer on low setting.

4. Once rose is dry, shape petals by placing skewer behind petal and rolling petal backward.

Going to a sleepover with friends is sure way to cure the winter blues. Sponge stamps make this sleepover set a quick-and-easy project for kids of all ages – and they’ll be the hit of the party!

Materials

  • Nylon sleeping bag, any size
  • Cooler, any size
  • DecoArt Patio Paints: Summer Sky Blue, Citrus Green, Petunia Purple

Tools

  • Compressed sponge, 5”x6”
  • Paintbrushes: liner, pointed round, round scrubber, deerfoot stippler

Basic Supplies

scissors, newspaper (to cover work surface)

Directions

STEP 1

Print and cut out pattern. (Note: The blue word “pattern” is a link. To access this pattern, select the link, then download and print pattern.) Cut sponge as indicated; expand in water and squeeze out excess.

STEP 2

For slumberbag, load top half of one sponge with Summer Sky Blue and bottom half with Citrus Green. Load remaining sponge, reversing color order. Use photo as guide to stamp slumberbag.

STEP 3

Let stamped footprints dry for one minute, then use scrubber brush to tap a second coat of paint on footprints, gently blending colors. Use liner to outline footprints and add toe lines. If desired, add movement lines and accent dots.

STEP 4

Stamp cooler in same way, using Citrus Green and Petunia Purple, and stippler brush to add second coat of paint.

Other Options

  • Use a fabric paint pen to personalize items with names.
  • Have sleepover guests “sign” items (using liner brush and paint or fabric paint pen) or write special messages.
  • Use same technique to decorate beach towels, tote bags, backpacks, blankets, or other surfaces.
