So patriotic, you may find yourself humming “God Bless America” while painting this pin!

 Materials

  • Wooden shapes: rectangle, 2”x2-1⁄2”; circle, 1-1⁄8” diameter; star, 1-1⁄2” across
  • Delta Ceramcoat Acrylic Paints: Light Ivory, Tomato Spice, Midnight Blue, Spice Brown, Golden Brown
  • Bar pin, 1” long

Tools

  • Loew-Cornell Paintbrushes: round: Series FAB, #4; Series 4000, #5; wash, Series 4550, 1⁄2”; angular shader, Series 4400, 1⁄4”; DES Stylus
  • Delta Ceramcoat Instant Age Varnish
  • Black ultra-fine tip permanent marker

Basic Supplies

scissors, pencil, transfer paper, sandpaper, soft cloth, newspaper (to cover work surface)

Directions

STEP 1

On covered work surface, use wash brush to basecoat rectangle and circle Light Ivory and star Golden Brown.

STEP 2

Print and cut out pattern. (Note: The blue word “pattern” is a link. To access this pattern, select the link, then download and print pattern.) Transfer details. Use #5 round brush to basecoat left corner of circle (“union”) Midnight Blue, and to paint Tomato Spice stripes. Dot union field Light Ivory. Use angular shader to float Spice Brown around inner blue edges. Transfer lettering and details; trace with marker.

STEP 3

For worn look, sand edges of shapes; wipe with soft cloth. Apply varnish to all shapes. Adhere pieces together as shown and bar pin to back.

Stiffening stitching cloth is a great way to turn a simple design into a sturdy wearable. Don’t be without a handmade sign of your American pride this Memorial Day!

Materials

  • White 14-count Aida cloth, 4”x5”
  • DMC 6-Strand Embroidery Floss
  • Bar pin, 1” long

Tools

  • Iron, pressing cloth, and pressing surface
  • Beacon Adhesives Sparkling Stiffen Stuff Spray Fabric Stiffener
  • Beacon Adhesives Fabri-Tac Permanent Adhesive

Stitch Type

  • Cross-stitch: 2 strands

Basic Supplies

scissors, ruler

Directions

Size / Stitch Count

Approximate size is 2-5/8″x1-5/8″; Stitch Count: 38W x 24 H

Pin

1. To find center, fold cloth in half and in half again opposite way. Mark center with contrasting thread. Print chart and key. (Note: The blue words “chart” and “key” are links. To access these, select the link, then download and print items.) Use two strands of floss to cross-stitch design. Press from back through pressing cloth.

2. Trim fabric to 1⁄2” from stitched area. Spray front and back with stiffener; let dry. Trim fabric to 1⁄8” from stitched area.

3. Adhere pin to back.

  • Round paintbrush
  • Lowe-Cornell DES Stylus
  • Ultra-fine black permanent marker
  • Aleene’s FunCraft Foam Glue

Basic Supplies

scissors, transfer paper, pencil

Directions

STEP 1

Print and cut out patterns. (Note: The blue word “patterns” is a link. To access these patterns, select the link, then download and print.) Cut craft foam as indicated.

STEP 2

Drybrush edges of heart Mendocino Red, sign Blue Jay, and star Midnight Blue. Transfer lettering; trace with marker. Use stylus to dot letter ends Black and star Light Ivory.

STEP 3

Adhere pieces together as shown and bar pin to back.
