Whether you’re heading to the farmer’s market or perusing your favorite boutiques, don’t forget this stylish, functional tote!


  • Canvas cloth, 1 yd.
  • Decorator-weight fabric: large floral, 1/2 yd.; stripe, 1/8 yd.; small floral, 1/8 yd.
  • Dark pink rick rack, 1 yd.
  • Pink assorted buttons, 11
  • Pink embroidery floss


  • Embroidery needle
  • Sewing machine and dark pink thread
  • Iron and pressing board

Basic Supplies

scissors, ruler, straight pins




Tote Bag

(Note: Use a 1/4″ seam allowance throughout.)

1. Cut fabrics as follows: 13-1/2”x2” small floral; 13-1/2”x3” stripe; 13-1/2”x6” and two 20”x 2-1/2” large floral; 13-1/2”x17”, 13-1/2”x5-1/2”, and 13-1/2”x12” canvas.

2. Using photo as guide, machine-sew stripe and small floral strips to 6” large floral strip, creating one patchwork piece. Press seams open. Finished patchwork piece will measure 13-1/2”x10”.

3. Pin wrong side of patchwork piece to 12” canvas strip along sides, keeping side and bottom edges even. (Note: Canvas strip will extend 2” beyond patchwork on top of piece.)

4. Machine sew rick rack onto patchwork seams.

5. With right sides together, pin 5-1/2” canvas strip to bottom edge of patchwork piece; machine sew. Press seam downward. Finished tote front will measure 13-1/2”x17”.

6. With right sides facing, place tote front and 13-1/2”x17” canvas backing together. Starting at top, machine-sew around sides and bottom of tote, leaving top open. Clip corners and turn right side out.

7. Press top edge of canvas down 3/4”. Fold down 3/4” again; press and pin in place. Canvas will overlap top striped strip 1/4”. Machine-sew zigzag stitches 3/8” from top edge of bag.

8. For straps, press 20”x2-1/2” floral strips in half with wrong sides together. Press raw edges under 1/4”; press. Press ends of each strap under 1/4”.

9. Machine sew 1/4” from edge of strap. Repeat for remaining strap.

10. Center and pin straps 3” apart to inside of tote. Machine-sew straps to bag with cross stitches.

11. Use three strands of floss to sew buttons to large flower centers.
