With color, texture, and design providing visual interest, this simple-to-make clay medallion is sure to attract the eye.

Materials

  • Black rubber cord, 2mm, 30″ length

Tools

  • Rubber stamp of choice
  • AMACO Rub ‘n Buff Silver Leaf Metallic Finish
  • Round cookie cutters or circle template

  • Acrylic brayer
  • Wooden skewer

Basic Supplies

cornstarch or talcum powder, waxed paper, ruler

Directions

Size

2-1/4″

Medallion

1. Follow manufacturer’s instructions to condition clay. Roll to 1⁄4″ thickness. Dust one side of clay and brayer with cornstarch or powder to prevent items from sticking.

2. Place clay, powder side down, on rubber stamp. Roll over clay firmly with acrylic brayer to impress texture on clay. Remove clay and place textured side up on waxed paper. Use cookie cutter or circle template to cut 2-1⁄4″ medallion with 3⁄4″ hole.

3. Roll scraps into 3⁄4″ ball. Gently roll ball into 1″ log; dust with cornstarch or powder. Pierce log lengthwise with needle tool, then insert skewer to enlarge hole. With clay still on skewer, roll over stamp to impress texture into clay. Hole will slightly enlarge when rolling.

5. Thread cord through medallion hole; tie overhand knot. Thread ends through bead; knot. Tie ends in overhand knot; trim ends.

6. For blue medallion, use 1⁄4 bar each of Polyform Sculpey Premo! Ultramarine Blue and White Clay, and 1⁄4 teaspoon black embossing powder for texture.

Tip

  • Try using mica powders to add a subtle hint of color and shine.

Color Fragments

Stampendous has this fun new product called Color Fragments. You may ask what are Color Fragments? Color Fragments are just that, bits of pure color you can glue on to any surface with any adhesive. Sprinkle them into melting embossing powders for an amazing Encrusted Jewel look. Crush with your fingers for smaller particles. I have used them on several projects and I love how they add texture, color, and a touch of whimsy to my projects.

Here is close-up view of a few of the different color fragment colors. They come in all different shades to coordinate with any project.

On this card, I used them to actually color in my butterfly after I had stamped the image.

A close-up view of the butterflies:

I applied a layer of Beacon Adhesives Zip Dry Paper Glue to the surface of the butterfly, applying it only to the area I wanted to cover with the first shade of Color Fragments. After I put the glue on, I sprinkled the Color Fragments over the glue, pressed down with my fingers, and shook off the excess. I repeated the process until the butterfly was completely colored. Because the Color Fragments are thin, you can rub off excess fragment after the glue dries. When I had finished applying all of the colors, I added a layer of Beacon Adhesives Fast Finish to give the butterfly a glossy finish.

Products

  • Stampendous Stamps: Decorative Grate, Jumbo Cling Butterfly Trio, Leaf Sprig, Life is Art
  • Stampendous Color Fragments: Chiffon, Burgundy, Caramel
  • Stampendous Crushed Black Glitter
  • Inks: Ranger Tim Holtz Distress Inks in red, brown, yellow, orange shades; black permanent ink pad
  • Beacon Adhesives: Zip Dry Paper Glue, Fast Finish

Here is a different card, created using a mix of the new colors released in January:

On this card, I just dripped glue across random areas of the card and sprinkled a mix of Color Fragments to coordinate with the colors in the image and the paper. I love the confetti effect this creates.

Products

  • Cardstock: green, white, peach
  • My Mind’s Eye, Memory Box
  • Stampendous Kiddo Birthday Stamp
  • Stampendous Color Fragments: Hot Lime, Rose, Hot Yellow, Teal
  • STAEDTLER Karat Aquarell Watercolor Pencils
  • Water brush
  • Paper distressing tool
  • Beacon Adhesives Zip Dry Paper Glue

On my final project, you can see I just applied it to add texture in a coordinating color:

The Color Fragments were applied after I had added a layer of Embossing Enamel around the edges of the photos. I applied Versamark ink on the cardstock and sprinkled with Embossing Enamel. I heat embossed the enamel and, while it was still hot, I sprinkled the Color Fragments into the Embossing Enamel.

Ribbon-Embroidered Pillow

Crafts ’n things Craft of the Day

These delicate, dimensional flowers might be popping up on more than a pillow sham once you learn how easy it is to do silk ribbon embroidery!

Materials

  • White pillow sham 16” square
  • Pillow form, 16” square
  • Silk embroidery ribbon, 4mm wide: periwinkle, 1-1/2 yards; creamy yellow, 1/2 yard; light avocado, 1 yard; lemon yellow, 1/2 yard; dusty purple, 3/4 yard; lichen green, 1/2 yard
  • Silk embroidery ribbon, 7mm wide: light pink, 3/4 yard; pale shamrock, 1/2 yard

Tools

  • Tulip Soft Matte Fabric Paints: Olive, Cool Blue
  • Ivy or leaf rubber stamp of choice
  • Chenille needles: #20, #22
  • Parchment paper, 15-3/4” square

Basic Supplies

scissors, ruler, sponge

Directions

Pillow

1. Handwash sham; lay flat to dry. Press. Insert parchment paper to protect back surface while stamping front. Place sham on flat work surface so opening is positioned vertically in back. Mix equal parts Olive and Cool Blue. Apply paint evenly to stamp with sponge. (Note: Practice on scrap fabric before stamping sham.) Beginning 2-1⁄2” from upper left corner and ending 3” from lower right side, stamp ivy on sham as shown in photo. (Note: Designer applied stamp several times to achieve results shown.) Let dry 24 hours before proceeding.

2. To thread needle, insert ribbon end through eye of needle, pulling through 3” length. Pierce 3” length with needle, about 1⁄2” from end. Pull back on opposite end until it locks securely around eye of needle. To secure ribbon, insert needle through fabric, leaving a 1⁄2” length at back. When taking first few stitches, catch the length with needle at back. When finished stitching design, tie a slip knot to secure ribbon at back. (Note: Do not drag ribbon from one design to next. Fasten off and begin next design with new ribbon.)

3. For periwinkle flowers, work seven petals using lazy daisy stitch. Make large creamy yellow French knot at center. (Note: Wrap ribbon around needle three times for French knots.) Make three avocado lazy daisy leaves.

4. For light pink flowers, make three lemon yellow French knots close together for center. Work nine light pink petals using straight stitch. Make three pale shamrock straight-stitch leaves.

5. For dusty purple bud clusters, make one group of five dusty purple French knots and one group of seven. (Note: Leave ribbon slightly loose to form “sloppy” knots.) Make random lichen green straight-stitch leaves around each knot.

6. Insert pillow form into sham.

Tutorials

Silk ribbon stitching only looks intimidating. Follow the tutorials below to find out just how easy it can be to embroider with ribbon.

Straight Stitch

To create a straight stitch, come up at A, then go down at B, keeping ribbon flat. (Note: May be taut or loose depending on desired effect.)

French Knot

Bring needle up through fabric; smoothly wrap ribbon once around needle. (Note: For this project, wrap ribbon round needle three times.)

Hold ribbon securely off to one side and push needle down through fabric at starting point.

Lazy Daisy

Bring needle up at A. Keep ribbon flat, untwisted, and full. Insert needle down through fabric at B and back up through at C, keeping ribbon under needle to form a loop. Pull ribbon through, leaving loop loose and full. To hold loop in place, insert needle through on other side of ribbon near C, forming a straight stitch over loop.

STEP 17

Add the panel to the Kraft Card Base and stitch around the edge to secure in place.

STEP 18

To attach the glittered snowflakes, place a dollop of Helmar ScrapDots on the back of each one and press into position on the card. If the glue comes out the center of the snowflake, cover with an adhesive pearl.

STEP 19

Add some clear glitter to the roof and other areas of the stamped image for a complete winter look; set your card aside to dry.
